Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss

A while back there was the extreme fad of the Atkins Diet and everything needed to be high-protein and reduced carbohydrates. But, when considering so many of those Atkins meals in the frozen foods sections it was easy to see that the proteins were packed into them while they were still full of sugars and and processed ingredients, it appears that there is so much more to it than that. ketogenic diet

Recently, there was movie released about the Ketogenic diet and its many benefits. For about the past half-century or so the presumption has been made that it’s the fat in the foods we eat are what cause things like high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and more. This made me want to dig a little deeper into the truth of the Ketogenic diet, more so than what is marketed as a fad diet for fast weight loss.

History of the Low-Fat Trend in the U.S.

Dating as far back as the 1940s in the United States, we faced the initial overwhelming outbreak of heart failure and heart attacks. According to Ann F. LeBarge, “In the 1950s, [Ancel] Keys and others promoted a low-fat diet—a special variety of which Keys labeled the Mediterranean diet—with less meat, more grains, vegetables, fruits, and some olive oil.”

With the initial presentation of facts that fat was the leading ingredient in our diet leading to those problems, it stuck. Unfortunately, what has come along with the reduction, or near removal, of fat from several fad diets over the years it can easily be seen that sugars and simple carbohydrates have made their way into a large portion of the Western diet.

Based on the theories that we have accepted in the rejection of fat in a healthy diet, we are still one of the unhealthiest countries in the world. As the nation that consumes the least amount of saturated fat, we are also one of the fattest and unhealthiest nations in the world.
